I was recently informed I have yet another battle on my hand with recurrence of my pancreatic cancer for the 4th time. I was initially diagnosed at the age of 40 with pancreatic cancer in 2010 shortly after being married and having my first bundle of joy Thomas Wooding III. I underwent a Whipple procedure on 11/3/2010. Prior to my surgery at Sloan Kettering my wife and I had our interview in order to complete the final stage in obtaining her green card. However in route to the interview we were listening to Hot 97 it was announced how the Barbados Prime Minister had recently died at the age of 48 from pancreatic cancer. Suffice it to say my mind was elsewhere. I have since undergone countless medical/surgical procedure, treatments and a litany of complications. I’ve experienced unimaginable horrific pain, weakness, vomiting of blood, bilious and feculent material from not only my mouth but nose, as well. On one occurrence a nurse was visibly emotionally distraught when I vomited 4000 ml of bilious material to the point I was having difficulty breathing. I was at one of my lowest points. I had done everything the right way. I graduated with honors from SUNY Albany. I was Who’s who in American Universities and Colleges in 1991. I invested wisely in real estate. I worked as a physician assistant two full time jobs fully knowing with my history of cancer I may be unable to work. I’ve read countless healing scriptures, Psalm 91 fully believing I will be restored by Jesus stripes. I had a reprieve from my pancreatic cancer until 2018. The recurrence was upsetting on many levels but the main reason was due to being informed my March 2017 scan at Memorial Sloan Kettering cancer center was negative like all my other 6 month routine surveillance CT scans since 2010. I had pain in June 2017 and went to John T. Mather hospital and underwent another CT scan. I was told this scan was negative, as well. In February 2018 my son and wife at 2:30 in the am were awakened by my stumbling in the hallway writhing in abdominal pain and coughing up blood. My wife summoned an ambulance. I underwent another CT scan and it revealed a very large tumor 5.8cm x 5.3 cm and it was surrounding my major vessels and abutting against my liver. I couldn’t understand how this could be but comparison films revealed both institutions had missed the lesion when it was 2 x 2 cm. I was furious!!! I went from a stage 1 to stage 4. I kept asking God how could two centers miss the recurrence. Since then I had to undergo stereotactic radiation, arterial embolizations, and stent placement in my portal vein. The cancer recurred again in 6/2020. I underwent IV radiation (Lutathera) PRRT treatments and a biliary drain placement which I have now. I lost my job as a PA due to my illness. I went from 180lbs down to 146lbs. Although cancer has upended my life and my family. I kept saying I shouldn’t have to lose everything due to an illness. I always kept my faith and prayed for God/Jesus to grant me abundant life as I have 2 beautiful children and that I along with my amazing wife want to be guiding forces in their lives to ensure they reach their farthest stars in whatever it is they want to do in life. Losing my six figure salary was devastating but the time I gained by being disabled at home has galvanized my spirits to no end. I cherish every second of every minute of every hour of every day with my wife and kids. Despite it all I’m truly blessed beyond measure. I will be restored completely by Jesus my Lord and Savior. I’m hoping my testimony can uplift another. Despite the emotional, physical, mental and physical toll an illness can exert upon an individual you can still persevere by maintaining one’s faith and having the mental fortitude to fight and not succumb to whatever is ailing you in life. I hope my words and testimony encourage you to always strive to become a better version of self against all trials and tribulations that befall upon us. Always believe!!!! Below are a few pictures of my beautiful family. My daughter (Angelica) recently turned 10 years of age on 1/27. She is an extraordinary gymnast. She was the overall NY State Gymnastics championship in 2019 and 2021. The event wasn’t held in 2020 due to Covid. My son nicknamed Tiger is an elite 11U basketball player and plays for a few AAU teams. The most notable of which is Kyrie Strickland Allstars (Kyrie Irving and Rod Stricklands 11U team) They both excel in school and are on the honor roll. I truly don’t know where I would be without them nor my amazing wife who is my personal nurse in changing my biliary dressing on a daily basis.
